Let it Snow!

A quick update today- here's my most recent perspective project (an imagined cityscape in one point perspective)! We're moving on to two point perspective next class period. I could have put a little more time into the shading, but overall i'm happy with it.

End of the Week figure roundup (yeehaw!)

Today in Figure we focused (again!) on using value, with special emphasis on the bits of bone & muscle visible on the surface of the body. The pictures on the left are halfway through the pose, and the pictures on the right are the final drawings. Each drawing took 40 minutes.

My proportions were a little cartoony, but overall i'm happy with the poses.

Next, some sketchbook samples- again, pretty cartoony, but i'm getting better. (Hopefully.)

some warmup gestures from today's class (three minutes each).

and finally, the three in-class pages I turned in to be graded for our Gesture unit.

And that's it! Have a great weekend!

If at First you Don't Succeed...

This week I learned the value of REDOS! My 2D design teacher is gracious enough to offer a redo period after our initial critiques, and it really came in handy this week.

This was my initial project... quite stylized and the light source isn't clear.

...and this was my redone version! I am so happy I got the chance to redo this assignment. My second attempt was definitely a better fit.

More Perspective

I finally finished my first graded assignment for Perspective! My critique went very well, and i'm looking forward to getting a grade on it.

Our assignment was to create a museum; I created an aquarium (that counts as a museum, right?)
If I was to redo this project, i'd clean up the perspective on the bottom of some of the arches, as well as more dramatically shade the animals in order to increase contrast. Overall, however, i'm very happy with my first "real" attempt at perspective drawing!

Part of Your World

It turned into Disney Doodle Night with the roomies... I'm also working on an Art Nouveau inspired piece for perspective, so one thing lead to another and BAM! Ariel!

The Hip Bone's connected to the... thigh bone!

What's more appropriate to draw on Friday the 13th than skeletons?

First, a quick gesture page. I need to work on composition!

Thirty minutes in to the hour long pose.

The same pose with a (sort of) accurate skeletal overlay.

A quickie- only 30 minutes for the whole shebang.

And that's all for today! Happy Friday!

Digital Digital Getdown

So, drawing digitally's a new thing for me. I'm still very much intimidated by the concept, but i'm getting better, especially since i've been practicing whenever I have the chance. Ringling's DPSC (Digital Painting Sketch Club) is a great resource, so i'm looking forward to attending those meetings as frequently as I can (between FEWS... and Quidditch... and Music Minors... I may have signed up for too many clubs.)

In any case, here's some samples of my work so far.

The original banner for my blog... until I found out it was formatted entirely incorrectly. Oops.
I guess figure drawing's a digital thing as well? People were getting into it at FEWS tonight, so I decided to give it a shot. I haven't found a digital brush that emulates the line variance of conte crayon yet.

A work in progress... I figured the easiest way to learn digital painting would be to use a movie still as reference and try to match it as closely as possible So, here's Rapunzel. I'm only about a quarter done with this (the remaining hair's going to be AGONY) but i've already learned a lot.

And, finally, a quick character sketch. Can you tell i'm in love with braids?

A Little Perspective

Drawing 1 (Perspective) has been one of my most interesting classes so far at Ringling. It's something i've never studied before, and although it can be quite tedious, it's a lot of fun. Here's a sample of my work so far.
After learning the basics of one point perspective, we drew a still life from observation.

After that, we moved on to drawing interiors from observation (which means no straightedges).

Homework for the interior unit.

My favorite assignment in any class to date... a toy design in one point perspective. My first idea was a princess castle, but that proved to be a bit beyond my reach at this point. A monkey treehouse is always a good second option, though!

And today's assignment, exterior perspective.

I'm really looking forward to learning more about perspective- it's already helped a TON in personal artwork, and we're only a month into classes!

Long Poses

Long poses, focusing on bony and muscular landmarks in the body. All are white & black conte crayon on newsprint.

The proportions are way off in the torso, but I like some of the shading.

My personal favorite of the bunch.

The drawings of the male turned out quite angular... not quite sure why. Maybe i'm just more used to drawing the female body?

One final pose. Really, really angular but I think it works (the sharp linear cane helps).

And that's it for now! It was my first experience with long poses but it was a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to more of these in the future.

Welcome to Art School

Has it really been a month already? Time has flown since I arrived at Ringling... here's a sample of my sketchbook work from the past few weeks.

Ringling has a really cool club called FEWS... basically, figure drawing for three hours every night. These were from my first session. I'm not a big fan of gesture work in pencil, but for longer poses it's okay.

More from FEWS. Our figure teachers ask us to assign a verb to each gesture (which results in about half of my drawings being labelled "stretch" or "relax"!)

Using marker was a fun new challenge. I'm looking forward to experimenting with different mediums throughout the semester.

The great thing about art school is that you can draw your classmates without being judged... chances are they're drawing you!

Some quick gestures from my first week at Ringling.

Ballpoint pens are lovely to draw with, but red wasn't the best color choice.

Misc. gestures.

and a few more!

Hopefully i'll be able to keep this blog updated with school assignments and personal work throughout the school year and beyond!
